Q. WHAT’S GOING ON HERE?
The W’ALL is a crowd-sourced art project, non-profit music venue, and fundraising campaign that brings music lovers, musicians, and the community together to celebrate and create art while fundraising for social justice causes. We’re attempting to construct the largest crowd-sourced piece of art for social good since the AIDS Quilt.
Through participatory sculptures, intimate benefit concerts, and the sale of artwork we are raising serious money — and serious awareness — for our non-profit partners on the forefront of some of society’s greatest challenges.
The marquee sculpture is a giant wall and sculpture, or W’ALL, engraved, embossed, and painted with tens of thousands of meaningful song lyrics submitted by folks like you.
It’s all free, but anyone can add a donation with their brick that gets forwarded to one of our non-profit partners.
Q. WHY A WALL?
In our political climate, the word “wall” has become synonymous with mistrust and separation. This project aims to reclaim the concept of a wall not as divisive, but as strong and unifying. The focus is on the ALL in “wall.”
Q. IS THIS POLITICAL?
The W’ALL is not political. We do not seek to pick sides, place blame, or argue. Rather, we’re focused on creating a place that is welcoming to all, grounded in the belief that music and art have the ability to unite and disarm.
Q. SO IS IT JUST A WALL?
Nope! Though the w’all is the most striking piece on site, it’s part of a larger and more interesting sculptural complex. Onsite we have a meadow of W’ALLFlowers – vinyl records cut into flowers – that have hand-written song lyrics on them, an intimate music venue, an art gallery, and several other musically-inspired sculptures.
Though we want to make everyone reconsider the concept of a wall, let’s face it. Just building a plain, stand-alone wall is a bit boring. Not to mention, it’s overdone. We’re trying to reinvent what a wall can look like, how it interacts with its environment, and the ways it can unite us in a fractured time.
Q. WHAT KIND OF LYRIC CAN I PUT UP?
We accept lyrics from any and all artists. Whether it’s a classic couplet from a music hall of famer, or the opening lines from that demo track your Dad never released, if you find the lyric uplifting, meaningful, or significant we encourage you to submit it.
It is important to remember, however, that The W’ALL is a project for people of all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs. We reserve the right to veto lyrics we deem hateful, obscene, or inappropriate. If we flag your lyric as unsuitable, we’ll send you a note asking for a new one.
Q. WHY SHOULD I DONATE?
Because it’ll make you feel good, duh! But if the karma and good vibes of sharing the wealth isn’t enough, all donors who send in $50 or more will receive a replica brick in the mail to display proudly on your desk, mantle, or atop your vinyl collection.
Bricks are 4″ x 6″ aluminum plates engraved with your name and lyric and they ship with base piece for mounting.
Q. WHERE WILL ALL THE DONATIONS GO?
All the profits from our donations and art sales will go to one of our non-profit partners focused on LGBTQ rights, environmental sustainability, mental health, youth empowerment, refugee rights, and music education. You get to choose which organization receives your donation.
The recipients you can donate to cycle out based on the season. In February – the month of love – we’re supporting LGBTQ charities working to solidify equal rights for all kinds of love. In honor of Earth Day, donations during April will support our friends fighting for sustainability and environmental justice.
Stay tuned for our entire schedule of charity partners.
Q. ARE YOU A 501(C)3?
We sure are! Both Soundwaves Art and W’ALL Austin are standalone 501(c)3s and all the non-profits brick donations will be sent to must also be 501(c)3s to receive their funds.
Q. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR GALLERY!
Our gallery is truly one of a kind. Visual artists from all over the world have donated the reproduction rights to us for a limited print run of one of their designs. We’ll be printing these designs on fine art canvas and donating all the proceeds to charity. These donated pieces are extremely limited edition and even though they’re produced on canvas – rare for a print run – they are an affordable alternative to purchasing an original piece of art.
We’re signing up artists every day, so keep checking back to see if your favorite artists has a piece in our gallery! If you want to donate your own artwork for reproduction, contact firstname.lastname@example.org
Q. CAN I COME VISIT?
Absolutely. The W’ALL is a living, breathing art space and community center best experienced in person. If you want to come tour the space just contact us and we’ll be happy to coordinate a visit.
